I know this is for Williams tables , but does anyone know the Bally equivalents please.

Cheers
Press (8) to get into ROM menu
Press (7) to start correct advancement
Press (8) several times until 04 is shown in the Credit Display. 'Auto-Up / Manual-Down switch is controlled by (7)
Press (8) repeatedly until you get to the adjustment number desired.
For example, background sound is defaulted to on. It is adjustment number 35. You'll see a 1 in the upper left display. Press (1) to change that value. To turn off sound, set the value to 0.
Note: Press (7) to reverse the advancement up or down.
(9) will exit/reset
Note: Auto-Up / Manual-Down (7) also controls the direction the menus will advance

Bally 17 and 35 MPU tables accessing the ROMs

The link is for score alteration, but it gives the overall keys to use.

https://www.vpforums.org/index.php?app=tutorials&article=94
Background sound is mode 18, pressing key 7 to reach that, then holding key 1 down with a choice of 0,1,2 or 3
0 chimes without background sound
1 chimes with background sound
2 Noises without background sound
3 Noises with background sound

Found the info in the above link, you have to hold *down the 1 key for the figures to increment for any of the altering.
* i repeat that as its why i couldnt find the key, it has to be held down.
no idea if this will help
For Xenon, X's & O's and Flash Gordon

What key is the self-test button equivalent?
Hit that until test #18
Hit the replay button equivalent, you get 00 'chimes without background', 01 'Chimes with background', 02 'noise without background', 03 'noise with background'

Im not sure which is the self test button or replay button for Bally as regards VPX.
Ive tried "experimenting" pressing keys, but i havent found them.
Read the instructions in some manuals, but doesnt help as regards VPX.
I have no problem with Williams.

(NB:- I have scoured the internet for the info for ages before i posted here :))
I can find loads mentioning the self test button and replay button , but not as they relate to VPX.

Cannot help with the self-test button
But you do have an 'insert coin' button? and you do have a 'start game' button?
'Start Game' is the same as replay

Just to clarify what RabidUrko has posted
His tip is for Bally games from Xenon (1980) to Kings of Steel (1984)
Before this it was dipswitches on the motherboard

👍
The background sounds when synth effects were new probably were lapped up even by myself, but im not that keen on them anymore as regards backing noise for a pinball, grumpy old git i become.
Not looking for argument but the link i provided states tables well out of that date era you mentioned.
Just to clarify its not my tip, its from VPForums link that i posted. The link states all the tables that that method should work on.

"This procedure should work for the following tables:
Bally 17 tables:

Bow and Arrow, Freedom, Night Rider, Black Jack, Evel Knievel, Eight Ball, Power Play, Mata Hari, Strikes and Spares

Bally 35 tables:

Lost World, Six Million Dollar Man, Playboy, Voltan Escapes Cosmic Doom, Future
Spa, Star Trek, Paragon, Kiss, Harlem Globetrotters, Supersonic, Dolly Parton,
Nitro Groundshaker, Silverball Mania, Space Invaders, Rolling Stones,
Hotdoggin', Mystic, Viking, Skateball, Frontier, Xenon, Flash Gordon, Eight Ball
Deluxe (both standard and limited editions), Fireball II, Embryon, Fathom,
Medusa, Centaur, Elektra, Vector, Rapid Fire, Mr. & Mrs. Pacman, Speakeasy (both 2 and 4 player editions), Spectrum, Centaur II, BMX, Grand Slam, X's & O's, Kings of Steel, Black Pyramid, Spy Hunter, Fireball Classic, Cybernaut"

And a few others mentioned too.

You really want to go there?

Early Bally solid state machines, the -17 series, had no electronic sounds. They had EM style chime boxes inside that were operated by solenoids

Early games from the -35 series, Playboy, Star Trek , had a simple (but not as simple as Gottlieb) tone generator. Operators had a choice of electronic chimes or noise. These games also had no background sounds
EDIT III
If you do want to change the sounds on this era, on a real game there are DIPswitch settings, on a VP recreation, you can access this with F6 (?)

EDIT
The link you provided is to do with replay levels and High Score To Date, and yes it is relevant to that

EDIT II
You can also use that method to see the audits. How many times you have played that table, How many Free Games you have scored
