FP and VP Torrents and Archive Collections

PotC for one is one of my daughter's favourites.. can't delete that one :p (it is also a machine I can actually "finish")

I wouldn't recommend letting children play with any other pinball simulator than The Pinball Arcade as
  • the lack of a proper (animated) camera may negatively impact their visual cortices
  • shitty physics* may negatively impact the development of their cerebellum
  • the ZEN games (FX2 / FX3) have too many crap tables... and the company has very questionable ethics
*while there are exceptions, it's unfortunate that most tables have this issue... nFozzy/roth physics can do miracles of course, but only few tables implement it... btw FizX is still incomparably worse than nFozzy/roth...

btw FizX is still incomparably worse than nFozzy/roth...
how can you tell if it's incomparable :)
That's an inspiringly unhelpful comment 😉

Don't joke with such serious matters. I took up FP first, then went to VP(X), and now bounced back to FP. Even though the physics makes me sad, FP is the future, I have no doubts about it.

I agree , I think FP keeps improving and I am sure VPX will too
So that should be a win for everybody

And then everything will die with VPE... in another 10y if not more :D
My spidey sense is telling me to stop here so, maybe next time :D

If we speculate that far into the future, I think that PinMAME has the best chance of evolution, starting with some sort of parametric description of the playfield.
This would be a good first step towards the separation of "physics" (what needs to be simulated in the end: solids, gravity, electronics) from the "theme" (paint and the color of lights). I find this important because the fixation I see on realism (and even hyper-realism) in some VP tables worrying. In comparison TPA had more of a drawing-like or sketched style, together with flatter lighting... if you look at any biology book treating flora and fauna you will see that the only ones worth it are the ones with drawings... those with photos are worth nothing when it comes to identifying plants or animals. Unfortunately, as a person who is passionate about books, I have seen an incredibly large number of biology books and textbooks that only use photos of animals and plants. But that is "prosperity," eh? The right to publish trash. I use Linux daily and sometimes I wonder if the persons working on the user interface (KDE) ever use a computer?! Connect the dots.

Regarding the roms (VPinMAME ROMs 3.5 beta on archive.org), I found it surprising that the collection is almost 14 gigabytes... so I looked into it and my conclusion is that 93% of space is taken up by 25 games* that I wouldn't trade a single Gottlieb Wedgehead for.

So if you delete all archives above the size of 7 megabytes, you will have all the roms you would ever need... in 1 gigabyte instead of 15.

* check out these "made in china" quality cashgrabs: 24, AC/DC, Avengers, Avatar, Batman The Dark Night, Big Buck Hunter, CSI, Family Guy, Indiana Jones, Iron Man, Metallica, Mustang, NBA, Pirates of the Caribbean, Rolling Stones, Shrek, Spider Man sman_, Spider Man smanve_, Star Trek, Transformers, Tron Legacy, Walking Dead, Wheel of Fortune, World Poker Tour, Xmen
Many roms are translated into other languages.
So while you are using 1 rom for specific table, usually the USA version, there are many other versions in the collection, that you may never use.
Other roms may be older versions of rom before they fixed something.
These "extra roms" do take up alot of space, but they are included because it is part of the "collection" of all pinball roms.
While it is great to find all the roms on one big collection, it is also good to do your own work gathering these, as 100's of those roms in that collection are missing sound files. If you want a complete working set, best to do the work yourself, and not rely on someone elses work, that may be incomplete or missing important files.

There is a difference between "extra roms" (which I wouldn't delete) and those which contain data that, for example, in MAME would be put into CHD directories.

@HailandKill666
I noticed that there is a newer version of FP torrent. Is there a public link to share it, if possible?

Thanks to the anonymous creator of the VP and FP sets for their hard work. Enjoy!

Any chance of persuading this "anonymous creator of the VP and FP sets", of adding a VP Backglass collection in the future?
Backglasses are an important part of Pinball!

i dont spend a lot of time here, sooo, it looks like i missed it.
i read through the thread and i still don't get it.
1. what are the Torrents updates for in VP and FP from post #1?
2. I don't have FP yet and dont have 612GB available on my gamer HD for VP.

You didn't miss anything.
1. The updates in 1st post are newest version available. (I just updated first post to point to the new updated torrent posts.)
2. The Future Pinball set is only 165.9 GB's, so looks like you have enough room for that at least.

i only have VP9 and VPX right now. i'll pass on FP for now.
maybe i'll get around to it later.
1. what do the newest torrent version updates do?
2. how do i apply the updates to VP9, VPX and FP?
do i drop the update into the VP folders or install into control panel?
3. looks like the VP update DL in post 1 is all or nothing at 612GBs.
i dunno if i can do that. i'll take a look at the C/drive tomorrow.

Do you understand what a Torrent is?
It is a way for sharing huge files or collections.
When a Torrent is updated, it is usually to add new content.
So the new Torrent will have everything that was in the old Torrent, as well as all the new content added. (So you never missed out on anything.)
You are not updating anything. (Unless you downloaded the old Torrent.)

What do you mean, "do i drop the update into the VP folders or install into control panel?"
This is a Torrent collection of tables. What do you do with other tables you download? Do the same for these.

no, i never heard of a torrent.
Ok, so the update is a collection of new tables and not a VP program update.
I thought it was a program update for errors and bugs.
xeno>>>>What do you mean, "do i drop the update into the VP folders or install into control panel?">>>>>
I used YT a lot when i was new to the program and still use YT sometimes.
It has been a long time. I dont remember the video.
I saw a video about "updating visual pinball" and "updating VP and VPX".
Change the keywords search to see what comes up.
If i remember correct in the video i watched the update is done by dragging the update to the VP folder.
There is a lot of videos. I watched a few videos but never used it.
These are a few search examples.

Are these new tables added to VP or a collection of already updated released tables in FS? FS is all i play.
maybe the forum should have an FS forum.
i dont have the HD space for the 612GB DL.
i might already have a lot of the tables in the DL.
there might be some tables in the DL i might be interested in.
i have folders of updated VP9xx-995FS and VPX tables that i have not extracted in the zip folder.
i don't know when i will get to FP.
can the forum open the file and create a list of DLs to pick from the 612GB DL?

Download the torrent file for VP. open the torren with qbittorrent application (my recommendation for torrents). Open the .torrent file.

Before you start downloading, you can select ONLY the tables you want. But it can be quite the job if you don't know what tables you want and trying to find the most updated version...

You're better off looking for the table you want here (for example) and download just the tables you want.

I for one just install VPX tables (no vp9 or older). In Future Pinball, my rig has only FizX tables.

I do share both torrents in full though.

Regarding install of the VP there are guides and videos aplenty so I won't go into that.

thanks Anon, i saved the links for later.
i'm good for now. i'm taking on too much.
i have plenty of VP, VPX, FP and updates to keep me busy for a long time.
this place needs an FS forum and FS tables DL.

Because VP sucks for single screen users (too small table view) and FS rotated you lose the backglass and even with DMD you lose part of the screen, I did this.

Have fun.

B2S server.exe Version 2.5.0.320 How can you make the B2SDMD stay on Visible. Make it the default instead of hidden. Did new install of 10.8 final have many tables I would have to open to change to visible instead of hidden. Any help would be much appreciated.

@ejrcooney Try right clicking on backglass with mouse pointer, and you should see B2S DMD Visibility setting at top of window.
