(mis)Adventures in Cooking

dam steve, lighten up and stop the insults....
it's amazing you are the one that violates the same rules you made but it's not ok for someone else....
that's a dictator/tyrant.
i did this probably before you were born.
back then we didn't have the scientific technics like we do now.
back then we just weeded out the males.
i don't do this any more....have not done this in maybe well over 40+yrs.
way back it was highly illegal to possess and smoke pot and maybe jail....DUI was a ticket.....times have really changed
now it's legal for over 21 and can buy it online or at one of those shops in the area.

Air fryer to the rescue for the lazy chef, hand cut wedges, frozen spring rolls and battered fish chunks, sprayed with oil, spiced with onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, turmeric, salt and pepper… tomato and chilli sauce on demand.

what kind of oil do you use in the pan?

Sunflower oil works for me, which reminds me I am all out, thanks I'll be off to the local store to get some. :yes2:
i dunno if sunflower oil is really intended for cooking, may have a lot of fat and have a low burning temp.
i use olive oil, peanut oil and avocado oil.

google
does sunflower oil have a lot of fat in it
Yes, sunflower oil is high in fat. A tablespoon of sunflower oil contains 14 grams of fat, according to WebMD. However, most of this fat is in the form of unsaturated fats, which are generally considered healthier than saturated fats.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Total Fat: 14 grams per tablespoon.

  • Unsaturated Fats: Sunflower oil is particularly high in polyunsaturated fats (especially linoleic acid) and also contains monounsaturated fats (like oleic acid).

  • Saturated Fat: It has a relatively low amount of saturated fat.
Is Sunflower Oil Healthy? Dietitians Explain
While the high fat content might seem concerning, it's important to note that unsaturated fats are beneficial for heart health and can help lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol. However, it's still wise to consume sunflower oil in moderation as part of a balanced diet, especially considering it's high in calories (120 calories per tablespoon).

What would we do without Dr Google?

The smoke point of refined sunflower oil generally ranges from 227°C to 254°C (440°F to 450°F), making it suitable for high-heat cooking methods like roasting, stir-frying, and deep-frying.

google has usually been real good.
i don't have to go to the library.
the only problem i have seen is the info does not always get updated.

maybe, but sunflower oil is not really intended for cooking.
take cotton seeds for example.
the farmers had a lot of cotton seed waste left over rotting in the yard after the harvest.
the oil companies came up with the idea of refining them and sell them as cooking oil.
just because something advertised to be used as edible doesn't mean it is so.
not everything that comes from the earth is good to eat.
try olive oil, peanut oil and avocado oil.......these are natural oils and work well.

google again
where did the idea of using cotton seeds for cooking oil come from

AI generated

The idea of using cottonseed for cooking oil originated from a need to find a use for the waste product of cotton production, particularly after the invention of the cotton gin. While early attempts at extracting and refining the oil were challenging due to its bitter taste and odor, advancements in industrial processing eventually made it palatable and commercially viable.

If you really want to improve your health, don't eat fried foods at all. The air fryer is healthier because it doesn't use as much oil. To my thinking, sunflower oil is better than cotton seed and palm oil.

i don't eat fried foods.

usually olive oil.

oils not intended for cooking.
a lot of stuff at the store is not good for you.

AI Overview

Oils not intended for cooking, or best avoided in high-heat cooking, include flaxseed oil, and fish or algae oil. These oils have low smoke points, meaning they can break down and become unhealthy when heated. Additionally, some oils high in polyunsaturated fats, like corn, **sunflower, and safflower oils, are better suited for dressings or cold dishes than for high-heat cooking.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

  • Flaxseed oil:
    .

This oil is very sensitive to heat and has a low smoke point. It's best used in cold dishes or as a dietary supplement.
  • Fish or algae oil:
    .

These are typically used as omega-3 supplements and should not be heated. They are best consumed cold in small doses.
  • Oils high in polyunsaturated fats:
    .

Oils like corn, sunflower, and safflower oils, are not ideal for high-heat cooking because they can break down and release unhealthy compounds when heated.
  • Partially hydrogenated oils:
    .

These are often found in processed foods and contain unhealthy trans fats.

  • Walnut oil:
    .

While healthy, walnut oil has a low smoke point and should be used in cold preparations or as a finishing oil.

Sunflower oil can be healthy when consumed sparingly and cooked at the right temperature (up to 450 F.) Higher heat can lead the oil to release toxic compounds that can negatively affect your overall health.

My air fryer has a maximum temperature of 400F
