Has anyone seen Mr. Ed?
I'm the famous Mr. Ed.

i find those cold whether coats very cute, marty.
so i take it some varieties are not naturally adapted to the cold?

do domestic horses ever get in a bad mood?
the last thing i would want is to try rubbing them or petting them and have one of them snap their fearsome jaws at me.

Yes, some breeds don't grow long hair.

Some people put coats on to stop the long winter hair from growing, so they can do shows.

And amazingly if a horse has been kept in a barn for a bunch of winters they will not grow as much of a winter coat, if you then put them outside it takes a few years for them to start growing one. Horses that come to the ranch straight from the racetrack need a blanket the first few winters.

And yea, they have all kinds of moods, from grumpy to playfull. If they have been properly handled they should never bite a person, they should see all people as a herd leader. They will bite each other a lot but not the leader. Same with kicking, but that one is sometimes so reflexive it can happen even in a well trained horse, they still act like prey animals sometimes when scared.

The one in the picture showing his teeth is actually yawning.

Back to the toys, I think the one frozen in carbonite made me laugh the most.

About a real pony: How much oats does a pony eat a day in kilogramme at an average?

thanks for the info. :)

for me it's a toss-up between that one and the cthulu one:

A full size horse needs about a bale of hay and some feed every day, one or 2 large coffee cans a day, cans are probably between 2 and 3 liters in size.

An actual pony eats less, it's real easy to over feed them and make them fat. Like the fat guy on the right side of this picture:

Yum Yum :)

Way to kill a topic....

Not that I have a problem with it, it's a personal decision what animals and/or plants you eat to say alive. Every animal is food somewhere in the world...

What really kicked off most of the bans in the USA was the horrible way horses were treated on the way to the slaughter houses, horses crammed into trailers made for much shorter steer and other things. Basically they were tortured for the last week of their lives. As usual what started with laws to stop the use of cattle trailers got the activists going and they pretty much stopped all slaughter for food in the US.

There is a problem with wild mustang overpopulation, and in this economy there are fewer people adopting them. So humane slaughter for food would be better than what's happening now.

Same problem with deer in CT where my dad lives, no one hunts, and if the towns try to do something about the population people protest about hurting Bambi, so they over populate, eat everyone's plants, and starve...

since i'm gaga about animals, i really admire the way the native americans slaughtered animals for food. they made the animals into dieties and had ceremonies thanking the animal for the bounty of its flesh. and since the animal was sacred, they strove to use every last bit, ie not wasting any part.

i had a science teacher in middle school who said "once i'm dead, bury me (without a casket) next to a tree so my body can nourish the tree." i always liked that idea, but i'm not sure how many states would let you do that legally.

Pretty much every bit of the animals processed for food now get used for something. It's a big business, and there's money to be made from every last part. People waste more of the animal at home than the processing plants do.

I guess it's just natural that people lost their respect for plants over time, there lots of evidence that early farmers had strong feelings about their crops, most of our fall holidays are leftovers from farmers feeling bad about killing off the plants they grew all season. That's what really bugs me about certain vegetarians, sorry folks, if you live you have to eat something that was once alive, no way around it. That's why I always say it's a personal decision what you eat or don't eat, not a moral one... Guess I've never seen a cow or pig with enough personality to stop me from eating beef or pork, I'd have be be starving to eat horse or dog...

Can't help but keep thinking of the Futurama episode with Popplers...

Mmmm horse meat is tasty .... ask the French they love it with a passion.

All the horses I've ever met were positively in a grumpy if not pissed off mode period! Can't say I'm a fan.

Was going to post a picture of the fighting stallions at Crazy Horse Memorial SD but I cannot get it to work. So It'll have to be an attachment .....

Back in the 70's my dad had bought horse meat sold at our local A&P supermarket! It was dry and very lean, like old venison, but it tasted ok, it stayed on the market for about 3 months then they (who really is in charge of that stuff?) took it off the market never to be sold in the US again (not around me anyhow)

agree, and i don't have a problem with factory efficiency in theory, but as a people we eat meat to the extent that it's a veritable abuse.

compared to producing a pound of vegetables, producing a pound of meat costs far more, uses up far more valuable resources (like fresh water, which is becoming increasingly scarce) and produces far more pollution and CO2. in terms of the effect civilised meat-eating has on the earth, it's a rather indefensible practice.

wow, really?
pigs in particular are highly intelligent animals, so i would think it would be almost impossible for them not to have strongly individualistic personalities. they may in fact be smarter than horses and dogs as a species.

so yea, i'm afraid i don't see any difference between slaughtering pigs, horses, dogs or cows. they're all mammals, which fact alone gives them considerably high intelligence.

Holly Crap, I Guess that I am totally out of the loop with this thread.

I will now keep my mouth shut.

how is it that i can answer marty and rick honestly and with no intended blame towards anybody in particular, yet i feel guilty when both stop replying?

am i overly sensitive or did i cross the barrier of good taste?
