Oh dear, do I love me some old comic books

EERIE & CREEPY didn't reprint EC art and stories, but several of the EC writers and artists did contribute to the early issues. Warren Publishing also created VAMPIRELLA and BLAZING COMBAT, both magazines following the pattern of EC, at least initially.

Yes, I watched Siskel & Ebert religiously, from their early days on PBS's Sneak Previews and on to their syndicated series. I didn't always agree with one or the other (or both), but they knew what they liked and why. They were both excellent writers, and I enjoyed their newspaper reviews as much as their TV appearances.

While we're walking down memory lane, I'll add that another fascination of mine is all things 3-D -- movies, comics, etc. I have a pretty large collection of View-Master reels, packets, viewers, projectors, cameras, everything. I like to occasionally play VP using the anaglyph 3-D option.

Not sure I've ever tried that.
Does one wear polarised shades or... maybe R-B shades to make that effect work?

Btw, have you tried VP & FP in Oculus goggles, etc? Seems like a pretty great combo for those with a homemade pinsim cabinet.

Bonus pts if you have such goggles: Gimli made a super-cool pool table game with a working, olde-timey jukebox. You can even walk around the room, interact with Stan Lee (lol), altho mainly it's to get in position for your next table shot.

I use PM3D, or Poor Mans 3D.
I get the screen to show 2 tables, 1 on each side of screen, and then I cross my eyes.
A 3rd table will appear in middle of screen. (Adjust your crossed eyes until full table is seen in middle.)
Then play table and the middle table will be in 3D!!
Warning, may make you permanantly crosseyed!!! lol
But it does work and is in 3D!

Yo Charles, I'm not sure whether to give you a Michael Jordan High-Five, or just cringe and stay seated, lol.

Kit Williams was the crosseyed, artist-designer of the treasure-hunt and book MASQUERADE, and he literally owned two eyes that would work independently, I shiteeth thee not.
(seriously tho-- very handy for looking at the subject out of one eye, and painting out of the other!)

Sadly, some cheating a-hole wound up stealing the coordinates of the treasure and making off with the it, altho overall it was a really fun experience & project for the public, and hugely gave rise to the "geo-caching" and treasure-hunting contests that persist to this day.

Now, the reason I knew about this stuff in the first stuff is because my parents bought the book for me in the first place. Dude-- it's got these *wonderfully* interesting puzzle-ish illustrations, right out of Watership Down!

My cabinet does not have a 3-D screen, so I resort to red/cyan glasses for the effect. It does mess up the colors, but the depth is outstanding on many tables. CFTBL is especially good.

I have tried VR goggles, but I am not comfortable with such heavy headsets during extended periods. I also don't care for the isolation shutting out the rest of the room.

I think there's a thread somewhere called "Super-Dickery," based on a defunct website that covered perfectly ridoinkulous superhero covers, but in any case, I saw this the other day, hahaha:

Oof, I seem to be on a roll, totally embarrassing myself, lately...

Rabbits, rabbits, and rabbits...

It was Kerry Callen:

Like, zoiks!

A friend gave me comic book his father had called The Death of Superman. It is not worth a lot but it is cool.

I was just speaking to @Isaac Sauvage 22bet yesterday on the phone about this very comic!
One of the best stories in my opinion.
One of those stories that stays in your memory for a long time.

So, over here... I was a passionate reader of X-Men from around... 1979 to the mid-80's. At the time, the X-Men were to me sort of a combination of gospel & mythology, i.e. super-powerful stories to satisfy my soul, and even help me understand how life works, here & there.

Mythology is POWERFUL stuff for the soul, you know what I mean?

ANYHOOO... speaking as Matt Foley:

Haha, Marvel really GOT me in 1980 with this, specifically:

Xmen 136, 1980.jpg

To me, it was the most courageous thing I'd ever seen almost any publisher do. Now, they'd killed off characters before (even in X-men, "Thunderbird" I believe), but this was a crushingly, fascinating, popular character... almost an icon of the X-men, one might argue. To me, it took superballs for the comics execs and writers to agree to do something so absolutely audacious.

And it made SENSE, right? I.e., death is an intrinsic part of life, after all. Not to mention, we've all lost key people in our lives who were ultra-dear to us, right? (I know I have) And... be-laboring the point even more-- grieving is a HEALTHY part of life, is it not?

Now, I don't mean to turn this in to a dang-ol' sermon, but that particular ENORMOUS comic event is part of why I thought Marvel (and DC, a bit) were just the best things since sliced bread at the time.

Ohhhhhhh... dammit, no.

What I later came to learn is that it's all about the revenue.

I.e. they'll kill a character off 12x, then bring them back 12x more if it means more profit for them. Including (lol) bringing different versions of them back in different "universes."

Total, corporate cowards.
ALTHO, I MUST SAY-- for some reason it really HURT ME BAD to see Superman die in that one film, er... let's see. Uh, not the one itself (way too much CGI bullshit), but it was the recap, from where he gets resuscitated somewhere.

Now THAT was an amazing (Greek Gods) - like death. And I'm not sure where that is now on YT, daggit!

Still searching for the scene, daggit... (it used to be on YT)

So it was basically the prologue of the next DC movie, in which they recapped what happened just before. So in this prologue-scene, it was like a slow-motion version of what happened in the last movie, in which Superman gets killed by a.. kryptonite spear, I think? But manages to slay the beast and save the day.

What really brought it home was this-- Superman was screaming in pain even as he killed the beast.

It was like nothing I'd ever seen before, like something out of my best / worst Greek God fantasies. And I'll be honest, gentlemen-- I did... I absolutely did *burst* in to tears upon seeing that.

Alright, now that I've thoroughly embarrassed myself AGAIN, may I ask you guys how Superman died in the comics..?

I think it was almost the same way as movie, except there was no krypronite spear.
But he was killed by Doomsday.
They just went blow for blow, and both died.

Ah, is that what happened?
Dammit, the death of Superman is always going to crush me,
like "are you sure you're actually a MAN?"

Ouch!
"Dude, I'm a flippin' killer. I will make you reconsider the barest attempts at your pathetic little attempt of a 'life.'

Nah, here's the deal:

NO! I meant the Beldar Conehead show, I meant all of that, sorry!

Gosh, I just can't... daf&*Q#.

Okay, sorry, but for me? I love the Coneheads to death, but it's going to be Jean Reno & Natalie, sorry, like 1A & 1B. I'm telling you!

Okay, this is getting sorta... huh!
So I was on my way to post more favorites from Beldar, and... what?!

I was born in 1953 and had three older brothers. I inherited their comic books (a stack of about 20 or so), and most of those were Dell 4-color issues. The only super-hero comics I read until high school were those set out at the local barber shop. I relished MAD Magazine.

As a movie buff, the main way to relive favorite films was to buy the comic book tie-in. This was long before VHS tapes. I discovered EC comics by way of CREEPY and EERIE magazines. Along with the Dells, those were the issues I would read over and over.

In the 1980s, the independent comics from Pacific Coast and Eclipse made their appearance, and I began collecting again. I would go to flea markets and used bookstores to hunt for the old stuff, and I met Don at one of the big flea market events. I had read his articles in the Rocket's Blast Comic Collector fanzine, and I was a fan of his Captain Kentucky comic strip in the Saturday issue of Louisville Times newspaper. He had not yet begun to write and draw the Duck stories, as Gladstone Comics was just getting going.

If we didn't live in the same Kentucky county, we might never have met. As it turned out, I made a valuable friend who shares many interests -- traveling, cuisine, classic TV shows, and especially movies and comics. Don would let me critique his work when he began doing the Duck stories, and the opportunity to design and draw the Money Bin was all his idea. I'm still proud of our work together on that project.

That's so cool that you love old comics and 3D collectibles! I've also been going through some vintage stuff lately and it's amazing how deep these genres are, especially with EC era creators. But your dedication to preserving this 3D world seems to need a lot of work. I sometimes need help juggling everything; when I get stuck, I use the help on here resource. You can use something similar to stay on track. Either way, these classic View-Master reels should look amazing in 3D!
It’s amazing how comics created such strong friendships! Thanks for sharing!
