Hey, Last month there was a lot of talk about "High levels of radiation in our snow" Blaming the meltdowns at Fukushima. I have tested our most recent snow fall and found zero amounts of radioactivity. There was more radiation emitted by the empty ceramic bowl @79.0 counts per minute. The snow filled bowl was averaging 60.1 counts per minute(3 ten minute integrations). So not only is the snow NOT radioactive, The water in the snow was absorbing more neutrons than it was giving off. I can't prove December's snow was not radioactive. I feel certain yesterday's snow has no unusual radiation coming from it..

damn that's a hell of a snowfall but I tell ya'
as of last night here we got 16 inches total of the white crap
I live in east Pa where usually for the entire winter we get about 10 inches
(praying for summer now)

Here, down about 90 miles south of you, the storm dropped the thermometer to 3*F and 10 inches of powder. I like to say"You Get It All In Maryland". We have the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains. We have an estuary(The Chesapeake Bay) Streams, lakes, rivers and forests. Every type of weather you can imagine (Hurricanes, floods,Tornadoes, drought, famous heat and humidity) All 4 seasons en-force. Hunting, Fishing, crabbing, oysters, Ducks, Geese, turkeys, Bears and coyotes. Outrageous taxes. Deep seated corruption. Appalling crime rates. Hydro-electric and nuclear. The world in miniature. The only thing we don't have...yet anyway...Glaciers and a volcano...C_S

those are nice blizzards, walter.

anyway, to the experiment... was anybody really suggesting that the east coast would get the radioactive snow? it seems to peter out by then, but maybe with time it will spread the love a bit more...

poor san francisco. my brother, his wife and daughter live there. :(
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...n-Francisco-beach-FIVE-TIMES-safe-levels.html

i'm definitely not eating as much fish as i used to, either. the hazards of pacific catches and all.

anyway, the body regularly sweeps out radioactive particles. this is part of what allows some longtime smokers to eventually recover, i.e. not be doomed to a cancerous death due to all the radioactive particles in the phosphorous-rich soil that tobacco is grown in.

i try to eat a range of anti-oxidants in my fruits and vegetables to hold out against this stuff. key word, "try!"

hell I grew up in North Jersey if I can survive that place
I can surely take some radiation on my snow!
we have atm 4F with a windchill of negative 17
and it's only 6:30pm

I heard about all that radiation it tobacco decades back. Something like one carton of smokes equivalent 7000 chest X-rays? Also there is more Lithium in tobacco than any other plant. Sounds relaxing. (I quit tobacco and benzoylmethylecgonine in 2001) I wonder about the seafood too. First it was Mercury now radiation. What's next...estrogen? Maybe A fungus that produces Psilocybin? I wish. As for the radiation I truly hope there is no real threat to those on the west coast.

mercury, pesticides, radiation, pharmaceutical drugs that get in to the rivers. as usual, it's all programs running at once, i reckon.

so i try to respond just as always-- figure the risk / reward and choose the appropriate, practical response. this is also why diet can be both medicine and poison.

yea, i don't know about the west coast. i mean, if large swaths of the middle of the pacific have gone dead, it's not exactly a good lookout. 5x normal radiation levels on the beaches of SF? there's gotta be some fallout somewhere, right?

don't forget arsenic in our rice too

I had to forgo cow's milk because it gives me leg cramps. I use shelf stable Rice Dream. It is stocked by most stores. Most other "Milks" like Soy and Almond contain carrageenen. I like them all but Carrageenen breaks down to 30% Mono Sodium Glutamate. Some other products I like are sweetened with Brown rice syrup. I guess I'm full of arsenic by now. My doctor says "eat the rice" But I think she hates my fucking guts....C_S

i was talking specifically about hazards of fish. but what is this rice - arsenic angle?

coily... are you saying that you know for a fact that MSG causes you leg cramps? because with most people, MSG is harmless. but maybe you're one of the ones that's allergic...?

anyway, i have some silk brand, unsweetened almond milk in my fridge. it substitutes locust bean gum for carrageenen. check it out sometime. it would probably taste like heaven after drinking rice milk for so long.

also, what about coconut milk?

MSG Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills

No, Not MSG. There is something in cows milk that actually interferes with one's calcium metabolism. You know how the dairy industry pushes the calcium angle. They will fiercely attack any doctor/pundit that says other wise. I became aware of the link between cow's milk and leg cramps about 20 years ago(So did Professional Football). I have Googled* this and found it to be one inconvenient truth for the dairy folks.

*
But don't we need to drink milk to get calcium? No. The best way to add calcium to your diet is to eat more fresh green vegetables. Cow's milk is high in calcium, but Dr. Ellis explains, the problem is that it is in a form that cannot be assimilated very well by humans. Dr. Ellis states, "Thousands and thousands of blood tests I've conducted show that people who drink 3 or 4 glasses of milk a day invariably had the lowest levels of blood calcium."

Dr. Ellis adds, "Low levels of blood calcium correspond with irritability and headaches. In addition, the low calcium level in milk-drinkers also explains why milk-drinkers are prone to have muscle spasms and cramps. Since calcium is necessary for muscles to relax, a lack of calcium causes muscle cramps, etc."
[/font]One of the most serious problems caused by a calcium deficiency is osteoporosis, a condition characterized by the loss of 50 to 75 percent of the person's original bone material. In the U.S., 25 percent of 65-year-old women suffer from osteoporosis. Their bones become brittle and easily broken. They can crack a rib from something as minor as a sneeze.

As for avoiding MSG. My family's symptoms from MSG> Migraines , Poor circulation in extremities, Numbness and tingling hands and toes. Hands falling asleep is the most common complaint. We have been telling people for about 15 years "You don't have "carpel tunnel " syndrome... It is the flavor enhancers in food that makes your hands go numb. Some have taken our advice and refrained from eating fast food or any thing that says MSG, Flavor, Natural Flavor or "Spice" on the label. Other ways MSG is sneaked into food, Autolized yeast, Yeast extract, Hyrdolized protein. The Inosinates and Guanalyates are in there to intensify the effect of the Glutamates! Look at the stuff in a bag of flavored "Dorritoes" we call that "The Triple Threat" Anyway...They come back and thank us about a week later. They say "I used to wake up in the middle of the night because my hands were numb and tingling" or "sometimes I could barely hold a tool or the steering wheel because my hands kept falling asleep" After about a week that crap clears out and no more numbness or headaches. MSG damages brain cells and swells the Myelin sheath that insulates nerves. MSG kills brain cells in a Petri-Dish. READ THIS> http://www.life-enthusiast.com/msg-excitotoxins-the-taste-that-kills-a-935.html

There have been several studies that point to rice absorbing arsenic from the soil. I figure this can't be much of a hazard considering all the other BS going on all the freaking time. Oh, and thanks for the Silk suggestion. Last time I checked their products had that carrageenen stuff in it.......C_S

I cook at home and rarely eat out other than Chinese/Thai/(Oriental) which is actually often, like at least once every couple of weeks. I suspect why I like that is the MSG. Never do I eat as much as when I go to Kings or LY, and never do I not end up hungry just 3 hours later. I suspect the MSG there as well. I don't have symptoms that I am aware of. If I become aware of brain cell loss though, I would suspect much more than MSG.

I'm not a health food person, I just prefer a sea bass to a bag of chips.

No, Not MSG. There is something in cows milk that actually interferes with one's calcium metabolism.

I think that is the Phosphides in milk. They also impede absorption of iron.

Could be the body rids the radioactive particles by producing a healthy phlegm, and lung diseases occur when the stomach stops producing the phlegm necessary for lung health. Radioactive particles are free radicals that easily bind to the reduction potentials of phlegm (a starch product that is produced in the stomach), but if the stomach is polluted by phosphorus, then the stomach instead produces sticky Albumins (i.e., egg whites are albumins) that prevent the lungs from clearing out.
In an egg, the egg white is a biological barrier that protect the yolk. The yolk is the active region of the egg which is designed to support the embryo.

Phlegm is produced in the stomach by the action of hydrochloric acid (stomach acid) heated with starch carbohydrates. Wet starches, i.e., corn starch mixed with water, will dissolve sand and mineral dusts, and may be the lung's protection against Asbestos.

And all smokers will die from lung disease? The Cancer Society states that the risk of smokers dying from lung cancer is 22.1% by the age of 85. That is approximately 4 out of 5 smokers who will not die from lung cancer by age 85, and this percentage figure has been constant since the lung cancer studies began in the early 20th Century.
That is a stated Rate of Risk. The Probable Rate of death is much lower, even as lung cancer is usually fatal.
Compare that figure to the recent claim by The Cancer Society, that 50% of Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and I have to conclude that there are other factors which are more significant than carbohydrate vapor (smoke). It could also be that these other factors result in a personal aversion to smoke by those who have a risk.

I am not going to defend smoking for others who need to avoid it, but I must speak when blanket statements are made casually that work against the rights of the people who smoke without incident, and for sure, which then misdirect the efforts to find a cure. Sometimes people think they are defeating cancer by attacking their neighbors, most of whom will not develop the disease from smoking, and they end up fooling themselves until it is too late. I would certainly be careful and follow the warnings in the event of a family history of cancer. Very important!

In Los Angeles, the smoking rates are down, the lung cancer rates are down, but the rates of breast and prostate cancer are now on the rise, above the previous rates of lung cancer. Breast and prostate cancer used to be No. 2 and 3, behind lung cancer,
So there are apparently other factors involved.

And radioactive snow? I remember tasting lead in the snow, like the flavor of a dusty snowflake. I know this for eating lead paint chips from a windowsill at around the age of 5 (1959), though I didn't realize there was lead in the paint at the time. They were only crunchy to me. The lead snow may have been from lead in the car exhausts and the smog in those days, but back then the freezer frost also tasted of lead, a light dusty snowflake, back in the day before frost-free refrigerators.

my family has a history with Cancer We lost my grandma in 83 to Lung Cancer and she never smoked at all nor drank
My dad died (hate the term passed on sounds so stupid) in 09 of Brain Cancer but he did smoke for over twenty years nonfiltered camels!
My mom passed by it but had three major strokes already
I smoked cigs for twenty years only quitting in 93 when my Best friend died
I kind of watch what I eat nowadays esp since atm I have Kidney stones can't touch anything with MSG due to Migraines
and try to eat mostly fresh foods avoiding fast food crap too of course Wendys bacon burger monster I am addicted to
but I limit my intake to one per month and have quit drinking booze three years ago
so I hope that my intake now is better that in previous years
I also gave up red meats save for that occasional burger
and feel better just due to that (no more heartburn or indigestion probs)
as for milk I switched from whole to 2% (doctors suggestion)
it tastes the same just ain't as thick so no more phlegm probs at night any more either
this getting old(er) thing sucks to say it nicely...!

I'm 51 don't bother with that never have, eat, drink, smoke, do what I like and have not seen a doctor for a check up ever, sure when I break bones and stuff I have to get those things signed off.

Did I win the genetic lottery, well dick size I didn't, that aside as it usually is, I live an active life do at least 100 kilometres a week on my bicycle and actually work for a living, well it's actual physical labour all be it only 20 real hours a week, play 2 rounds of golf in between, really WTF?

Oh yes did I mention, yes my teeth are fucked, still I can chew though a lamb chop with what's left!

I had my first anti-smoking lecture in like third or fourth grade(Circa 1965). We were told tobacco smoke paralyzes the cilia that line one's lungs. I believe this impaired ability of the lungs to rid themselves of whatever toxic/irritating materials leads to the development of disease. I have my doubts about tobacco smoke itself causing serious rates of illness. It should be stated that nicotine is a powerful poison. That nicotine is the most powerful naturally occurring insecticide. I am more certain direct contact with tobacco can cause tumors. I saw this for myself during a gruesome experiment on white mice in 7Th grade(Ugh) . If I had my druthers I'd be smoking opium ... Got any opium???

@coily,
yea, i'm with you on the dairy! the only thing i eat regularly is unsweetened yogurt, for my biotic balance.

okay, you're right about silk soy milk-- that's the one with carrageenan. but it looks like west soy and trader joe's soy milk are both carrageenan-free as well. hopefully that helps expand your options. as a matter of fact, i do regularly drink silk soy milk, and based on this convo, should probably stop and look for a replacement! shit!

thanks for the details on MSG and cronies... i had not realised the extent of it. fortunately, as someone who eats mainly whole foods, i don't have to worry too much about that particular issue. no, my terrible habit at the moment is not washing my fruits and veggies... because i'm a lazy dumbass. :)

re: arsenic in rice,
okay, interesting. i guess once again i'm in good shape because i don't eat much grains. also, it looks like science and relevant orgs are still struggling to figure out the weightiness of this problem... with the aim of setting standards and recommendations.

@sleepy,
the radioactive particles i was referring to occur across the body and are therefore removed at the... intercellular level, i guess is the word. this of course is not exclusively a smoking issue, since even the body itself naturally produces some radiation.

re: my diet,
i eat a range of colors in my food to get a range of anti-oxidants. my dad and his father both died of prostate cancer, though, so based on that and just the ambient level of carcinogens in the environment, i don't feel i have any real choice.

lost 40lbs the past few years... retooled my workouts... completely overhauled my diet... feel better and more energetic, mostly. still have a ways to go. 48yo in april.

still drink too much, though. negating lots of the progress i've made.

but i'll probably trying vaping sativa and mega-dosing turmeric as potential substitutes. wish me luck!

I have had an Uncle and a cousin on the married side of the family die from cancer, so I am interested in better answers than higher taxes on tobacco for unrelated expenses.
For better or worse, neither blood side of my family has a history of cancer, but my cousin died from cervical cancer. Some folks believe a virus is responsible for it.

CS, the tobacco experiment on the mice. What was the form of the tobacco used and the concentration? Were these normal mice, or bald mice, or other?

that's interesting. i believe it's in "lives of a cell" (lewis thomas) i learned that the real problem with bacteria is not their mere presence (since we're walking bacteria factories anyway, 10 phages for every human cell), but the fact that virii cause some of them to go 'haywire', leading to biotic population explosions, leading to overall imbalances.

Not looking too shabby there Ike, all my adult life I've never been under 68kgs or over 82kgs and those are the extremes, generally I hover around 72kgs. Here ya go my mug shot, it's about a year old and I have shaved since then, though still much the same.

cool pic, steve! you've moved on from that look i remember long ago... sort of a page-boy haircut. and good to see you look in shape, like you talked about.

That photo takes me back a few years!
I can't decide if this is "My Brian Wilson Look" or "My Tanya Harding".

sweet, another great portrait.

sleepy, you look like some great american novelist. which, in fact... maybe you are! :D
