A buddy of mine just picked up a Stern Stampede (2-player EM). The game is now in pretty good shape, after some cleaning, new parts, etc.
I had him gently clean all the contacts, which fixed a few problems, but not all.
Here's the rundown on the symptoms:
When resetting the score reels, often the first player hundreds reel gets "stuck", usually on 7 or 8, and the score reset relay keeps cycling. If I "nudge" the reel itself, it will usually reset back to 0, the score reset relay stops, and everything is good.
If the hundreds reel is already at 0, or if it decides to not get stuck on a particular reset, and the tens or thousands reels are not reset to 0 before the hundreds reel, all reels will reset to 0 but the score reset relay will continue to cycle. If I then pull the hundreds reel out of the mount, the score reset relay will stop cycling, and all is good.
When we get the scores all reset and start to play, everything is good, but once the first player hundreds reel advances, the ball index relay starts to hum (although the machine still operates fine). On subsequent balls, once the ball goes over the playfield runway switch (with non-zero on the first player hundreds reel), the ball index relay starts to hum.
From the schematic it looks like these symptoms are related, but I'm struggling to figure it out.
It would be great if someone could point me in the right direction. He's got a young daughter who doesn't understand why we can't get it fixed...
Also, did Stern publish a"Sequence of Operation" for their machines like Bally did? I've got a Bally Amigo machine, and the "Sequence of Operation" has really helped sort everything out.
Thanks for any and all help.
