I think Cowboy let being a vpf moderator go to his head, and he seems to feel it still makes him better than the rest of us

He seems more like a vigilante to me, except he's trying to protect the wrong people as they are clearly guilty of at least some aspects of what was discussed. He doesn't see that, of course because he's blind. Of course, if he'd mind his own business like he's supposed to, he wouldn't have that problem. I mean doesn't he have homework to do? What happened to turning over a new leaf? Maybe they kicked him out of school already for starting fights....

Hey there Cowboy. You're as welcome here as anyone else, but I hope you don't intend to continue where you left off at vpf. That would make me quite unhappy. And as somone once referred to me, you don't want to make the Big Cheese unhappy. And if you are going to be a regular here, would you please put spaces between your paragraphs? That simply drives me up the wall.

It's been a month since I began this thread, and I thought that since I noticed that Gottlieb has just registered here, now might be a good time to give my impressions of VPU after that month. Much of what I first posted was knee-jerk reaction stuff, based on posts by Gottlieb at vpf, and as such, some of my assumptions have not come to pass. Gottlieb had stated that he wanted VPU to be a place where pinball was discussed, and other BS was left at the door. From what I have seen of their forums, that's pretty much the case. As with any new forum, they had a few rough moments, but these were ironed out, and that is that.

I post release annoucements for tables by Patrick and me, and a few other PN authors at VPU, and provide links to the download pages where the tables can be found. And since these are not direct links to the tables, VPU is welcome to use them if they choose to do so.

I would hope that if and when Gottlieb posts here, he'll be treated just like everyone else. In other words, respond to what he posts here and not to any past real or imagined issues. We all like to mix it up at times, and that's no problem, but let's wait and see what he has to say before we weigh in on him, if the need arises.

Since I don't visit chat rooms, mainly because my arthritis won't allow that much typing, I have no idea what is discussed there. But it seems to me that if you visit their chat room and have issues, why not settle them there. We've had some great discussions and debates about pinball, and I'm sure that will continue. We've also had any number of all-out arguments, and I know we'll have more. But I see no reason to target Gottlieb, or anyone for that matter, unless they fire the first salvo.

I'm sure Gottleb doesn't need or want me to run interference for him, and I won't. All I'm saying that everyone's welcome here, so don't make the same mistake I did by overreacting. Give the sucker :p the same break you'd give anyone else.

I'm finally moved in my new place and set up. I pulled a muscle in my back and I am slowly recovering. :(

My new connection is slower then before. I will consider changing to DSL or something because cable is not available here. I have direct tv and I may be switching to them for my ISP, anyways I'm back online.

I tried to download Theater of magic table from PD but it keeps stoping a little over halfway. It may be my slow connection.

I grabed Starmans new table and it's great. I have a little catch up to do on the tables. My slow connection isnt making things any easier. heh

Ouch, moving never seems to go as smoothly as it should. Sorry to hear about your slow connection. If everything goes right my broadband will be hooked up Tuesday afternoon. The broadband company is sending a tech to install an ethernet card and make sure I have everything configured correctly, all at no charge.

With such a slow connection, you might want to consider using Opera for you browser, which is what I use. It has a built-in download manager, which lets you resume DL that go wrong for whatever reason. Another nice feature is that you can set it to be recognized as IE or Mozilla instead of Opera. That has made DLs a lot easier on dial-up.

John

Heh, I forgot I have Opera now. Firefox seems pretty nice, though once you get it customized. Too bad there's still a few sites that only seem to work right with IE.

I've always been told if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything.

I agree completely as far as R/L personal relationships go, but I think a thicker skin is needed for an Internet forum. While some of my observations are knee-jerk in nature, many of them are made with an eye to kick-starting discussions and debates. And to be fair, Gottlieb, at the time I wrote my original comments in this thread, you were voicing some strong, and what some may have seen as harsh, opinions at vpf. It was those comments and opinions I mostly was responding to at first.

It seems to me that you don't want any disagreement at all in the VP community. I simply don't see things the same way, I find that discussions and debates often make for a much more interesting site and experience. And different than some other VP sites, we not only welcome any and all opinions, we also never edit any posts for content, and have yet to censor anyone.

That said, you're always welcome to voice your opinions, and to join any discussion we have, but anyone who doesn't share your views is just as welcome to defend their POV. I still think that your willingness to work out some recent problems and misundersatndings showed me a side of you I wasn't sure existed, and I was favorably impressed.

John

Actually, I must agree: If youse gots nothin' nice ta say, shut the fuck up, eh? :)

Seriously, whether real life or not, handle it. Disagreeing and getting into debate is not mutually inclusive of saying something not nice. Name-calling doesn't solve anything, even if the names happen to be etched on large, easily-broken ampules of perchloric acid.

Debate is healthy as long as a point can be achieved, and as long as the debaters don't play the psychopathic twist-and-turn game on the points they are trying to reach.

Discussion is healthy because it can bring about many improvements on already existing tables/code/art/anything.

Disagreement is healthy because it has the potential to make both sides aware of each the other's point of view. It doesn't mean you have to agree, but if you can SEE the other side, you may be able to understand more clearly WHY you feel the way you do, rather than just following blind dogma you may have been spoon-fed from a very early age, or even your own perspective which has, over time, become blindly dogmatic.

These things keep us alive, but keep in mind that they are steps to plateaus of harmony where we can stop and breathe for a moment! Constant harmony can lead to stagnation; constant discord can lead to insanity.

The balance of all things is necessary, but that doesn't mean that you must live constantly at the balance point.

Hoping I haven't rambled too much...

No, you seem to have rambled just about the right amount. If being a part of the VP community hasn't driven me looney yet, it never will I assume. What I can't quite figure out is why there are a few yokels that I never, ever agree with. The interesting thing is that it seems as if the majority of folks seldom agree with them either. On well, in the year 2189 none of this will matter at all. But I'll still have been right and they'll still have been wrong. :p

That is my opinion. As my hero Mark Twain once said, "It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

Ah cool, the quote game, I used to play this one with Leo, he loves this game, maybe if we're lucky he may stop by with a few of his own, my turn. :D

"A wise person does at once, what a fool does at last. Both do the same thing; only at different times."

Lord Acton

I love the quote game. My favorite quote is my own, which I first started using in the 7th grade. Although I may have read it somewhere and adopted it, I believe I did originate it. "I might not always be right, but I'm never wrong."

John :oldman

How about this one then John. ;)

"I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught."

Winston Churchill

How about today's common theme/excuse "I don't have enough time" :)
AFAIK every day is 24 hours, and everyone has the same 24 hours per day. Replace that with "I don't feel like it".

nice hero... he's right up there in my pantheon as well. one of my favorite clemens quotes is something like:

"give me ignorance and confidence, then success is sure."

i loved that PBS special about him a couple years back.

That could have been my mantra in life. I absolutely hated being told what to do in my younger days. I've loosened up as I've mellowed, but you'll do beterr asking me rather than telling me.
Destruk, I like yours too. I wonder how many people who claim they don't have time also spend part of every day in boredom.
