sorry, i didn't notice the second reply until now.
anyway, it's provocative but too easy to dismiss IMO.

much better if it had been in the form of this, which by its very obscurity has attracted a tremendous amount of unsolicited attention:

There was a nice article in Wired on Kryptos a month or 2 ago, not something you'd leave behind for people without computers.

As for the guide stones, the text has some garbage and some good ideas, mostly I like the astronomical aspects.

oops, i didn't notice those until you pointed them out.

that reminds me a lot of the anasazi buildings in chaco canyon, which i think is the biggest collection of astronomical 'meta-instruments' in the world. WP is not really the best place to learn about them, but i'm lazy:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaco_Canyon#Ruins

i have a really nice video explaining all the astronomical details, but it doesn't look like anybody has uploaded it to youtube. :(

btw, there's a 10-part series running on discover channel now called "life after people". it explores what's going to happen to our houses and civilisation after we're gone:
http://www.history.com/content/life_after_people/episode-guide

i either saw one of these episodes once, or watched a one-shot program that the series was based on. whichever one it was, it was pretty fascinating. IIRC the hoover dam would be the oldest thing we've built to last the longest- even longer than the pyramids.

I've seen lots of those mentioned in various programs, once people started looking for them lots were found. Last time I was in northern AZ I picked up a DVD about the local ruins, can't remember if they mention any astronomical stuff.

I watched most of the one-shot program last year, interesting but not all that relevant, when we go it will not be nice and neat, we'll do way more damage to the ecosystem than depicted in that show. The corrosion/erosion of everything we build is accurate but the animal and plant life aspects are not realistic.

yea, they used the sanguine concept of humans simply disappearing as their jumping off point... my guess being that they didn't want to scare off their viewers too easily.

yet so many people apparently liked the show that they apparently decided to get a bit more realistic (and gruesome) this time. i don't know... i'll have to catch an episode and report back here to all the thousands of people reading this thread.

Really? I might have to look into that. But I can't imagine that they went to the point where we cut down all the trees, over farm and over graze every inch of land, over fish and pollute the oceans, leaving mostly just the smaller creatures to start over....

well it would be hard for them to avoid that possibility since that's what we're, you know, currently heading towards.

but, no, wait... according to elton, pete, tom and others, i'm a chicken little. i'm just banging my liberal drum and trying to get al gore elected, even though i dislike gore personally and science has already settled the debate about GCC.

I don't ever recall even implying that you were Chicken Little in any thread, whether it had to do with Global Climate Change or not... :headscratch:

If ya were a chicken, you'd be a big fukker and no mistake. Little indeed .... in your dreams buddy :D

um... sorry about being obnoxiously aggressive there. (aggressively obnoxious?)

i was having a bad night and decided to 'fix it' via the solution of alcohol.

*ahem* so what were we talking about?

I fix it every night that way.

Global Warming ..... that'd be the Bourbon sir :)

i have nothing to say

Hello Phil - what ya been up to then?

Watched an episode last night when I couldn't sleep and was flipping through channels...

Same concept as the original, humans just vanished leaving everything as it is today, even the police horses in NYC were still saddled up with bits in their mouths as if the rider disappeared off it's back. Breweries still full of beer waiting to explode. One really lame teaser going into commercial, "something added to the gateway arch at the last minute leads to it's demise", it was the keystone piece, of course it goes in last, it's the top of the arch dummies. They dropped the ball on how that would fall apart, had the keystone dropping out first then the unsupported sides collapsing, the keystone has the pressure of both sides of the arch pressing on it, it can't just fall out.

I will not be watching any more episodes...

more likely would have been slow (or sudden) shifting of land leading to the two pieces losing their stability and balance, no? and/or perhaps the slow corrosion of steel leading to segments crumbling, as they depicted in the demise of bridges in the original show... in combination with local weather effects.

anyway, i can kind of understand their (continued) approach in the show- there are so many possible ways for humans to go under that they decided to focus on more concrete aspects.

still, if you're going to do a 10-part series, one would think you would easily have enough time to cover the top six most likely ways for us to get wiped out... like maybe critical solar activity, GCC, nuclear winter, untreatable epidemics, asteroid/comet strike, continued population explosion, etc. *shrug*

Not sure there would be that much shift in the few hundred years it would take the stainless steel to corrode. But it would be from corrosion, they even showed it all corroded, but then had the keystone part just fall out... If the top was that corroded it would get crushed by the force from both sides, unlikely the corrosion would be even so it would probably start to twist at the top as it crushes in, once that starts it would fall apart pretty fast. Guess they were lazy on that one, didn't bother to investigate how arches fall, they went with a "last in, first out" idea...

I think you probably guessed it before, they liked the idea of what would happen to all our stuff but didn't want to scare off viewers with what might actually cause us to disappear.

It's really amazing how the media will go nuts over the doomsday scenarios that are statistically insignificant, but mostly ignore the things that need to be addressed soon.

Hell, either way, the future sure won't be boring! 2012, global warming, finance crisis, you name it. We've got it all.

Come come my good mad woman, you cannot just come around here shooting your mouth off without evidence to support said claim :awaken: you'll need scientific evidence to support that or at least some references that we can debate.

Nah, I'm just messin' with ya girl ..... and you're right we are fucked. The global warming has missed Wales - we're getting the global pissing down with rain. The Aussies have gotten our share of the heat yet again. :headscratch: the bastards.

if you're getting more rainfall than normal then it's possible that it may have a relation to GCC. not saying it is- just that it's a possibility.

my understanding is that warmer air holds more moisture, so can release more rainfall or snowfall than relatively colder air. this is why people who say "it's snowing more than ever here, so GCC can't possibly be true" may be unwittingly poking fun at themselves.

No it's very cold ..... even the banana's are wilting in Wales you know.
