what happened to VPforum?

If anyone would like to help by finding chached versions of vpforums.com, I'd appreciate it. I haven't been able to glean anything on the Internet Archive.

I got the unPINMAMEd list up hear now and only the first page of posts.

Thanks, Joe! What I'm really interested right now is a listing of the forum and subforum headings. If anyone would like to contact me via the IM programs listed for me, feel free to do so.

It is shocking to see how little faith some of you people have. But what is outright disturbing is how quick some of you are forgetting the good times. Does VPF currently have problems? Obviously. Has AJ ever really let the community down? No! So why are you so quick now turning your backs on him? Maybe he isnt the perfect site owner, and maybe there are some things that could be done better on his part. I would be the last to deny this, because i cant really understand his behaviour either. And yes, when the situation looked real bad i too said it would probably be better for the community as a whole to make PN the new headquarters. But no matter how bad it might have been *looking*, it cant be denied that in the end he always made sure that the forum is up for us, year after year, often on his own money, and he promised to keep doing so just a couple of months ago when the forumsoft has been upgraded. So for Gods sake, why dont you give him a break and just wait what happens? Obviously it is not in his hands right now, so the least you could do is wait until he is really dead before you bury the body,...

As for that 'vpforums.something' business, personally i think this is pretty low. While i do respect and appreciate the initiative behind it, the way how it is done is pretty dissappointing. Imperfect owner or not, you must not forget that the name 'VPForums' is what it is today solely thanks to AJ and his continued efforts in keeping the forum up for all these years. And for that he deserves our utmost respect. The place as a whole has a certain reputation within the emulation scene which it has rightfully earned during all that time, and when other places write about or point to 'VPForums', they mean AJs place, not some other place who merely ripped the name and put a different domain behind it in the hopes to inherit the original places' merits. So creating a new forum, all well and good and by all means good luck, but if one does so they should at least have the decency and do it with their own name and earn their own merits. If they prove worthy they will be respected for what they made of their place themselves, and nobody can say they had to stand on the shoulders of others to achieve it.

That said, i tend to agree with Yogiholzer and the others. In case AJ should really not return VPF online, (which i think is highly unlikely but lets hypothesize), PinballNirvana already offers all the community needs and is also already accepted as the 'main-meeting-place' after VPF. Another forum might therefore in deed do more damage than good since the little rest of regulars might split up, which means eventually both places might be ending up as ghosttowns. Of course this would remain to be seen, but personally i would not want to risk it,...

(P.S.: Before the usual 'opinion-critics' go off now: I am not interested in anyones opinion regarding my opinion! You all may
gladly have your own opinion and it may be a totally different one than mine and you wont be getting an argument from me if you express it here. But my opinion is my business and opinions are generally not 'wrong' or 'right' or even debatable. They are what they are, plain and simple, therefore i need noone to evaluate mine for me. And if somebody needs someone to play stupid flamegames with them, for God sakes please find somebody else...)

Nobody blames you for your actual opinion, Phoenixx.

I'm still in a little conflict with myself what to think about the situation and it changes from minute to minute.

I guess we all only post our current (changing) thoughts and that's good. There's definitly no final right or wrong.

If there wasn't that behavior, VP was already dead.

Wont be long now.

The servers are obviously already up again, so once AJ has restored a backup of the site all will be good,...

Keeping a complete VPM table library ain't difficult....just upload all tables in alphabetic order to FileFront.com, which has unlimited hosting capabilities... it's 100% free hosting system.... you could make a thread here and keep the direct download links in it....including the screenshots....!!

It's just a matter of time/effort....anyone can do it...!! We're only talking about 2-3 Gigs of files...which is (relatively) small package by today's standards.

Another option is simply upload 'em here....if someone can make a list of missing tables I can help.... I have all VPM tables.
Please feel free to upload anything here at Pinball Nirvana, lots of unused space and bandwidth, see this post if it helps:

Hello to all! I'm happy to see that many of the VPF members are...this means that VPF is still alive in another form. I hope that more people will find PNF when they find out that VPF is down...

So, there are some bad things about the loss of VPF...the table database, the posts and Randy...I think Randy was only communicating within VPF, so now i don't think that he is going to search for us when he has a probably update...we lost him forever?
Just wanted to mention that Randy is a member here, I was in contact with him in August about a email that was sent to PN regarding the possible licensing of Bingo games in a new hand held unit. Randy also used to release new VP versions at IRPinball .

Not sure. I e-mailed the webmaster at missamerica.com about it to make sure it wasn't an issue with theplanet's server. I haven't heard from them so I don't know if that's why the page is now blocked. It's funny how the missamerica page appeared after several days of being offline.
Maybe a hack planted a timebomb?

Yes, I have, yogi. I get connection timed out when I tried it that's why I asked for help.

I'm not trying to pick a fight with you Phoenix, Noah and I are just trying to ensure that the VP community will continue despite AJ's less than exemplary dedication. I know I can't be the only one who tires of VPForums.com going down about every 6 months or so.

We'd also like to have as many resources as possible at one site plus have that information and data as easily accessible as possible. We want others' input as to what we should have available and how things are setup.

We want to be as inclusive as possible; we'll even allow Shockman to register, but he'll have to abide by the same terms of conduct as that is expected of anyone else. If you or anyone else chooses not to participate for whatever reason, that their personal decision, but we won't outright turn anyone away.

so you've been lurking for a long time. good for you. how many of the serious problems in the scene did you personally attempt to help fix? not to mention your information seems misguided- the average number of member visitors and the average number of working original authors and working re-creating authors have both been consistently dropping since around 2003.

anyway, if you want to be a VP cheerleader then that's fine but please don't leave it at my doorstep. i was speaking of serious issues confronting anyone who is thinking about putting major effort into a VP site project. i wanted them to be aware of the difficulties inherant in the situation, which hopefully they are. because i don't want someone to put a lot of effort into something for the VP scene and then run out of gas when it doesn't turn out quite like they envisioned, ultimately hurting the scene. that's kind of a theme around here.

When I was lurking the forums I was playing some tables now and then. I wasn't a real pinball addict. To be honest, the latest VP creations of Pacdude and later JP's made me play and post more. The older tables just didn't really appeal enough to me.

The new forum from Noah might sparkle some new interest. Also that he registered vpforums.org is a very good move. I believe in choice (that is probably why my main OS is Linux).
I don't think Noah is an idiot, so I'm pretty sure he knows the risk involved. Trying influence his spirit by patronizing his attempt doesn't feel right. Let him go for it, and if it doesn't work out... well too bad, nice try. We need guys like that, enthusiasts who try to change things for the better.
I see the same spirit in Groni that's why I think JP and Groni is such a great team.

I'm a VP cheerleader because it still is the best way to play pinball on the PC. I use VP-man to play my vp tables. It tracks what I play, and 95% of the games in my playing list are made in 2007, 2008 or 2009. Who cares there were more authors in 2003 and more visitors to the forum. I didn't say there are more authors now. There are more quality releases. For a program that isn't been improved for a long time, it is pretty amazing that there are still so many visitors and forum posts.
Also a small community with nice people is better than a big community filled with Shockmans. Generally I like the people here, and the people that left the scene lately weren't mr/ms sunshine. Can live without them.

The games are greatly improved, and that's the reason why most people join and visit the forums. Discuss the games and play them. Even when development would stop, we would still have the games and we can discuss them, share our high scores or just discuss about anything.
I'm not worried.

About uploading tables and trying to host "all" tables..... I think this is ridiculous. I don't even look at AJ's for tables, because it is so cluttered with outdated and unplayable tables, that it is a waste of time. A new site needs to be "new" it should allow authors to upload their own tables, but to just start uploading all of those old tables is a waste of bandwidth.

I also like to be in control of "my" tables and I don't want them all over the place as it's hard to update them and some of my early tables need to RIP, so please don't dig up any of my tables and host them, unless "I" decide to upload them.

I would like to see a download section for tables that are authorized to be updated or modded. This would be a good section for new authors or people who just want to work on a table, but can't do everything that is needed to create a new table from scratch.

I posted the Star Trek clip because I discovered the source of Ruby's VPF avatar in it while finding the clip posted on a movie site in regards to the unfortunate death of Ricardo Montalban and yet I was also struck by the feeling of being abandoned on that lost planet incommunicado.
There was no intent to declare anyone dead and I hope AJ is alive and well, though I do wonder. I hope for the best.

Ted, Shockman would be held to the same standards as anyone else. Realize though that the site owners and bill payers would be on active staff... ;)

Valamir, im not out for a fight either and what you do is not my business, (i merely retain the right to have my own opinion), but was the style in which i wrote the two things you quoted really not clear enough for you to recognize that it was entirely and completely non-serious and merely a 'pre-reaction' to the inevitably following 'OMG, OMG' panic-posts as for what happened to VPF?

I think it was, therefore i really dont know why you quoted this, as it makes you appear, and please forgive me for being blunt, 'intellectually challenged'. I know that you arent and i dont mean to imply otherwise, but others might not, so before you write something like this, for your own good, please think about it if it really makes sense and if it is worth posting it?

Obviously i dont know any more than you do, so the one to explain what actually happened to VPF, and what its future will be, is certainly not going to be me. If i would really know something then i would have told you already by now,...i think that much should be understood,...

Phoenix, unless purposely trying to incite someone; you should quit being so patronizing. I not the only one to have noticed this.

Noah and I are trying to help out the VP scene. Unless you're against helping out the VP scene, and I assume you're not, maybe you shouldn't seem to be tearing others down who attempt to help out the VP scene...

Valamir, if i would answer you i would only repeat myself.

I already said that i respect and appreciate the efforts per se, and that only the 'how' is not right in my opinion as AJ simply deserves better for his efforts than doing something like this right over his head even though 'VPForums', the name and the place, are clearly his baby and even though it is not even clear yet whether or not it will be coming back online.

I mean if AJ would give the vpforums domain to you, out of free will, that would be an entirely different story. But from what i can see you are just taking it without even asking. And as a matter of fact you are not only just taking it, you actually intend to replace the original! And that is just not right, it is exactly the same, though on a much bigger scale, as if someone changes the ball image on a table that someone spent several years on to create and then presents the entire thing as his own creation without the consent of the original creator. And that is being considered wrong too around here, not? Even if the one who changed the ball image acted in perfectly good faith, and even if they just intended to do something good for the community. Its a principle thing simply, is it not?

I mean be honest for a minute, how would you feel if somebody did the same to you? Wouldnt you too think "what a bunch of ingrates, gladly used my forum for years and i payed, and now they steal my name and pretend to be my site?". Be honest...

See if you can find a translation for 'leichenfledderei', thats what this is usually being referred to. It is considered very bad conduct, and that is really the only problem i have with this as this is considered to be disrespect de-luxe. And must it really be that way? If you would at least call it 'NewVPForums' or whatever, that would make perfectly clear that it is a new site not related to (or officially meant to replace) the original VPForums. You would loose nothing but gain immense respect, (quite certainly from me although that might not be important), for being respectful towards AJ and his real VPForums, and of course simply for doing things the right way. Otherwise you might shoot yourselves in the foot,...of course im not wishing that on you but it might happen. And what does it gain you then? A lot of work for nothing.

Look, i can perfectly understand your enthusiasm about the project, and that you are acting in perfectly good will is pretty much understood. But you just shouldnt let this enthusiasm blind you so much that you cannot longer distinct between a right way and a wrong way of doing something. Thats really all im trying to say. It is still only my personal opinion though, so if yours is a different one, who am i to argue. Im in no place to tell you what to do or how to do it as it is ultimately simply not my business and you are old enough to make your own decisions. And thats the bottomline, too,...

P.S.: If you want to talk to me about this in private rather than here in public, feel free to contact me via PM. I have nothing at all against you personally so you can be sure i will be talking to you in a civilized manner as long as you do so as well,...

I think everyone is getting that now, it had a copy of the miss america website for several hours this afternoon. Seemed like a copy, you could use the 2 different IP addresses for vpforums and missamerica and get the same pages, traceroute went to different places so it wasn't a simple redirect from one server to another.

I did a little searching but couldn't find out if the miss america site is hosted by "the planet" and somehow got copied, how else could a copy end up on the vpforums server?

I see this as hope vpforums might come back, if there was a fire like there was (last year or 2 years ago?) only this time the servers were lost, now new hardware is online but something obviously went wrong with restoring the software today...

Later,
Marty
