What music are you listening to?

I'm one of those weirdos who hates most C&W from recent decades, yet loves Hank Williams, 'old-timey' music, bluegrass and hillbilly / Appalachian. That last category I find especially interesting, since the backbone is largely Scots-Irish traditional music melded in to New World sensibilities. (altho TBF one can pretty much say that about any category of music)

Anyway, the opening to the album reminded me of Stave Martin, Earl Scruggs and friends jamming out.

Bah, I think there's an alt version with more players from Letterman or something, but I couldn't find it just now. Anyway, I really loved how everyone got a chance to do a solo. I found that it added an extra dimension, demonstrating their mutual friendship and respect.

Compare that to the Eagles final performance during their classical run, in which, when the final song ended, the bandmates rushed each other and started pounding fists, or something like that. Kinda like the Beach Boys from what I've read, who grew to despise each other over the years. Yet it's probably a lot more common than most fans guess, I would guess.

Next time I want to see the full version though, and not cut short just to fit in to a Simon Cowell drama-queen series.

Also reminds me of an act from one of my favorite TV progs of all time, The Gong Show.

EDIT: If you're a Simpsons-head, you may remember them parodying the act via Homer & Barney. (I forget the ep, tho)

So Steve Martin actually knows how to play the banjo!

Dude's a friggin' genius IMO.

Like, he's not just a huge pioneer in standup comedy, has a PhD of philosophy (IIRC), but also he's a professional magician (member of the acclaimed Magic Castle), as well as a director, writer and playwright (again IIRC), and of course... a hugely successful actor, with lots of great performances to his name. Oh yeah, and professional musician of course.

Not to mention, he's an absolute scream at awards shows, where everyone is typically trying to be deeply complimentary (and politically correct) about their fellows, but Steve typically finds a way to low-key rip them apart like it's a roast, instead. Lot of ways to crash & burn that way, ruining your reputation (see Mike Love's famous rant for exhibit A), yet Steve always seemed to pull it off!

Reminds me of my childhood listening to the Dr Demento show!
