(mis)Adventures in Cooking

I wouldnt say we have anything thats adventurous in the UK food wise, but maybe im speaking as a Brit.
Maybe all countries see their dishes as that ?
Fish and Chips is a main Brit dish, and i suppose one that is known worldwide is our Full English breakfast, which is very nice if done right.
I like my bacon nice and crispy.

Always gets a "titter" when someone mentions that over here.

Sounds like poppycock, you blaggers!
Cheerio.
I'm off for a spot of tea.

I've always liked the look of those and the Scots & Irish versions, just that I'm not in to the processed meat stuff, like blood sausages. Just some more eggs & pertaters would suit me down to the ground.

Hey! Speaking of recipes,
an elderly friend of mine came back home this past Thursday, and I offered to cook him or get him a meal. (his nursing home food was evidently pants)

HE: Okay, something simple, like a burger.
Je: Er, but the diner just closed. And the grocery store doesn't have full frozen burgers, other than the patties, I think?
HE: Then can you get some frozen patties and make up some full burgers with fixin's?
Je: *grumble* Alright, sir. ("he's certainly earned it," I thought to myself)

(Keep in mind I have CFS/ME, and my energy tends to run out *fast*. But whatever, let's just do it, because I do love cooking.)

Long story short-- I wound up buying some fresh hamburger at an 80% protein / 20% fat mix and went from there. I figured dude had thoroughly earned his extra-delicious fat-content after three miserable weeks in hospital, haha.

So I did up some nice, sautéed onions, melted in some slices of Provolone to the burgers, added some greens and tomates, toasted up the buns, and rushed down to get him is meal while it was nice and toasty. (I made one for myself too, to be clear)

We ate together in this hilarious candlelight (his electricity isn't getting turned back on until Mon), and I kept thinking to myself... "this is it?? this burger is like totally mediocre after all that effort. like WTF, duderino?"

So I wound up saving my half of my burger for later, mainly on principle of not wasting food.

Okay, later on I got the munchies, and decided to throw that half-a-burger in to the AF. Gave it a couple minutes at ~300°F, tasted it, and like, WHAT THE FLYING JUDY JETSON--

Like, suddenly, it was a massively better burger than it was originally. NOW better than Hungry Jack's (i.e. Burger King) / McD's, etc. oO

Why was that though? Why?
Well, I'm still not sure exactly, but I think maybe... it's good to drain the pattie? Maybe even bake it a little bit after frying it in a pan...?

Oh man, food science is pretty-damn interesting, as my dumbass continues to learn about. XD

Only thing i wont touch is Black Pudding, made from blood, not for religious reasons or anything, just sound of it puts me off.

Now that has me remembering their "hit" they had that video you just posted.

Yo Steve, may I ask what regional accent that was?

Corollary-- what would you say the greatest difference is between any two Aussie accents?

Air fryer spicy wedges, fish and spring rolls, tonight.

Linguine...😋
Oh rabbits, that looks incredible. oO
So... what does it taste like? Is it like lasagne? Like cacciatore..?

Oh... YES YES, you're never capable of giving a straight answer, I know...

WHATEVS

Tastes like a rich delicious bolognese with tomatoes, tomato paste, onions, garlic, jalapeno, olives, mixed herbs, peas, carrots and garnished with parmesan.

Wow... that does sound handy upon one's tastebuddies. oO

Okay, I'm an idiot. Steve CRUSHED ME upon this one. :o

Got myself a food processor the other day, so I think this maybe a nice recipe to try...

It's been nudging, 100F here for the past few days! 🥵

Okay, I'm back to completely hating you. 😔

(whisper whisper: "just pure jealousy speaking")

Microwave poached eggs on toast, using my new microwave egg poacher, works a treat, 80 seconds on high for runny, 90 seconds for semi firm and 100 seconds for firm. :yes2:

Reminds me of something my mom made frequently.
Egg n a Hole.
You rip out hole in bread, and cook the egg in center of the bread.

Eggs and bread also reminds me of a favorite of mine.
French toast!

I have done those in the air fryer, though rather than cutting a hole. I use the bottom of a glass to flatten the centre then crack the egg carefully into the crater. Maybe these are Lunar egg craters? 🎑

At the moment I'm cooking up a little salmon fillet in the good ol' AF. When it's done, I'mma try making a little spinach tortilla wrap, with the salmon resting on a bed of Buffalo Ranch salad mix, which I got as a kit.

SIDE NOTE: I've become fairly fond of these kits, especially as my fridge is currently broke. Now yeah, some of them are too salty (via the dressing), and some of them are borderline junk food (the lemon one is delicious but includes fried cheese pieces), but others hit the spot quite nicely, and are overall healthy & nutritious. Yay! :D

Examples of the brand I like:

(do they have stuff like that at your local place?)

Anyway, the recipe called for sauteing in butter, but since I only have ghee, I'm using ghee, which you can store indefinitely at room temp. I've also tried this (very simple) salmon recipe once before, and loved that it recommended coating the fish with sage. It's a brilliant combo going by the last tasting!

Otay, I'm not gonna bother taking pics this time, as I think everyone knows what baked salmon, salad and a wrap looks like.

FINAL NOTES:
- after melting the ghee in to a round, disposable baking pan that fits the AF, I baked the salmon 3min per side at default heat.
- sampled the fish just now, and it's perfect
- Btw, when I say "disposable" baking pan, I mean the thin aluminum ones that you can easily bend. They're easy to clean and reuse, and great for being an eating vessel with high sides, which prevents spillage when eating my typical soups & stews on my couch, interacting with computer or celly.
- Lastly, YES-- of course it's usually better to enjoy a nice fillet on its own, not thrown in to a sammy or wrap as it were

TASTE?
- phew, it all worked out this time!
- salmon was a little gamey, but the other ingredients worked to balance things out nicely , such as some ghost pepper blue cheese dressing I lightly added

LESSON LEARNED:
- carpe diem ("eat fish every day")

My mum used to make eggy bread , beat up eggs and bread dipped in it and then fried
