Hey Nic, I have to post this and get your take on it.
This is an official California .gov site for assessment and listing of substances known to contain carcinogens.

http://www.oehha.ca.gov/prop65/docs_state/mjcrnr061909.html

EDIT: I should have said the marijuana smoke is what they claim contains carcinogens.

Here's the .pdf with the chemical listings on page 8.
It's what I thought though. They list "benzopyrene a" which always forms when burning fats at high temperatures. What they don't say is that so does meat with fat on the BBQ. That's why the char-broiler outlets like Burger King cut back on the fat content. Unfortunately, char-broiling fat-free hamburgers turns out like a charred dry sponge with no taste.

This is the goofy double-post!

haha, touché.
but yea, igniting many (most?) substances will create carcinogens, and you seem to have found the specific culprit in the 2nd post.

smoking anything regularly is just a bad idea- people should be using vaporisers instead, of which i believe there are electric portable versions for tobacco, also.

on that note, i will be sampling some kraton soon.

Well, they're cracking down on the e-cigarettes too.
As for pot, try pot salad!

I really feel that the gov is better of focusing their money on a cure for cancer instead of playing the blame game. I've have seen some of the weirdest reports on what causes cancer and other studies that contradicts the reports. It just feels like everything causes cancer for them. For example I've heard the media report that oral sex causes cancer, good luck stoping the public from that danger. And recently the media reported on strong studies that shows if you eat certain types of vitamins it protects you from the negetive effects of smoking. Well I just eat mostly like a vegitarian and excersize hoping that it protects me from this long list of causes. :pint:

well, food and lifestyle are medicine.

if you handle those well, there's little to worry about since there's not much else you can do.

EDIT: btw, what happened to the legal marijuana push in CA? i see the state is now issuing IOU's to some employees in lieu of paychecks...

The voters passed a proposition legalizing medical marijuana, but the government is resisting, the Feds have been busting, and Los Angeles issued permits for medical pot stores but, given the city's financial crunch, have been raiding the stores and on a side note have been tightening the fed Section 8 housing rules and passing mandatory pet spay and neutering laws in order to kick people off Section 8 while making revenue by charging $35 to perform mandatory castrations or hysterectomies on our pet dogs and cats.

Er, what was the question?

yipes... i guess the question is, is there hope for CA and iceland?
(as if the stakes were no bigger than those)

Los Angeles is elitist stupid. LA wants to prohibit all lifestyles which they disagree with, those which they have no control over, while they then run what's left of the place like a fine manicured lawn in Beverly Hills, you know, the ones with the "Keep off the Grass" signs everywhere. But, no culture, no spending, hence no revenue, at the same time, no attempt to develop revenues from the cultures and lifestyles which they only mean to delete from view.

But then after outlawing everyone else, the government keeps running out of revenue.
So, they want stoic unpopulated aesthetics to prevail while those responsible for the snobbery don't care at all about the needed revenue. They only care about their control of public places as their private, exclusive spaces. The hippies were removed back in the 1970's by beefing up anti-loitering laws, and these laws prohibited citizens from standing on our own streets longer than 20 minutes unless we were waiting for a bus. If a business owner complained to the cops, you were forced to move on or go to jail.
These laws were only removed about 12 years ago, but they were used to kill everything from hanging out to Cruise Night and beyond, and it didn't matter if you were at the burger stand. If you were also standing outside the snooty store right next door, the cops could use that to remove you.

EDIT: About the snobs, this town bends over backwards for Hollywood production, if that be a clue about who the snobs are.
LA outlawed skinnydipping and yet still takes permit money for porno shoots at the same beaches.

Yes inhaling pot smoke may increase your risk for cancer, it DOES contain trace amounts of nicotine just not as much as tobacco. Use a vaporizer, this heats up the ground-up pot (keif) until it releases all the thc goodies with NO smoke at all, theoretically it is a better high too, I have yet to try it for they are not cheap. A good one goes for about $100 US. I have seen a handheld one but am unsure if it really works. y'know sitting around campfires also increases your risk too( being a former scoutmaster I can't help but wonder how much fire smoke I've ingested all these decades.

oh and New Jersey just approved of MM! (medical marijuana) just like in Ca, you CAN have a card so you can legally have it but BUYING it is still a crime, so a cop COULD still confiscate it because you had to buy it somewhere, thereby breaking the law. It's is a sad catch-22

As for us, we make butter with it. Better and longer-lasting buzz. Rice Krispie squares and brownies still look as innocent as ever though, har har har...

Or, how about a Magic Potion?
Ingredients:
1 tsp cleaned and ground marijuana
1 tsp butter
1 shot vodka or rum (Captain Morgan's is great here)
1 cup milk
pepper or cinnamon

Instructions:
5. Place cleaned, ground marijuana and butter in frying pan and heat on medium, mix until butter starts to sizzle and marijuana browns. Turn down the heat if there’s any
smoking.
5. Pour in rum quickly. Keep stirring until at least half the shot has evaporated.
5. Add milk and turn down the heat. Stir until milk is steaming, but not boiling.
5. Add a small squirt of honey and stir.
5. Strain into cup and add cinnamon and/or other spices to taste.

This makes an excellent ceremonial drink. I would double the recipe, though.

The effects should be felt as quickly as 15-30 minutes.

The high should be much stronger than that associated with smoking and should last for about 3-4 hours.

Cancer risks are all about cumulative exposure, so you'd have to breath a lot of fire smoke to reach a risk even remotely close to something like living or working with a chain smoker...

Of course the other side is that everyone has a different tolerance for every chemical, expose a bunch of people to the same thing and some will get sick soon, some later, some not at all...

two more notes:

- campfires are going to produce a lot more smoke volume / exposure than cigs. (not to mention carbon monoxide)
- tobacco with all its additives will probably produce a far greater list of carcinogens than raw wood campfires.

just anecdotely, it doesn't seem to me that people with frequent exposure to campfires have the same level of health problems as frequent smokers.

But it's real hard to breath in campfire smoke as strongly as cigarette smoke, much hotter, gets in your eyes making you turn away, etc...

So it's probably more like second hand smoke, if you were exposed to it every day for lots of hours it would probably have similar risks. There are cultures that live like that, I wonder if they have ever been studied?

i'm sure it's a mixture of 1st and 2nd hand smoke... the only question is in the percentages.

it's almost impossible to avoid breathing some of the 1st hand smoke regularly even when you don't want to. hovering near the fire, doing what you need to, you're going to get some no matter what. and even being in the vicinity, the wind 'magically' finds ways to make the smoke follow you.

i'm not complaining, though. being around campfires makes me and my clothes smell smoky, but to me it's a pleasant smell with little or no after-effects. if being outdoors and around campfires took years off my life, it would be still be a fair trade to me.

electronic cigarettes in today's headlines:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090723/ap_on_bi_ge/us_electronic_cigarettes_fda

i had no idea what these were. apparently it's just an alternative to the patch, only shaped like a cigarette and with the nicotine delivered by vapor.

there was another 'e-cigarette' which i learned about around 10 years ago, which was an electric vaporiser into which you stuck a real cigarette, thus avoiding the ignition of all those additives in tobacco, thus cutting way down on the carcinogens. i mean, to me that's incredibly smart if you're a smoker, but they didn't take off...

They use an ultrasonic element similar to an ultrasonic humidifier in order to release the vapors, but lack companion carbohydrates and naturally-occurring buffering agents that are normally present in the smoking version.
Someone at a smoker's forum claimed to try one and, according to them, spent the rest of the day in a mind fog. That is possible with a nicotine-only product.

what kind of work is this. Electronic cigarettes is getting popular day by day and uses of it increasing but is not so important thing that in can publish in the newspaper.

I've tried grass a few times. It's pretty hard to smoke for a non-smoker... it's quite cool but not for me. One Roger Waters gig felt good when I smoked before though... I totally understand the attraction.

Hash, on the other hand, is total shit. Tried it a few times... mostly just bad vibes and very "heavy head" in the following day. Amphetamine was even worse... tried it once to boost my training... it felt like drinking seven liters of coffee... total shit.... I don't understand how anyone could be addicted to that. Amazing.

Alcohol works sometimes (I drink maybe 5-6 times a year). But nothing beats the razor sharp, sober head. I guess I'm lucky because I don't care for any drugs that much.

But I agree... grass is obviously the healthier choice. It should be legalized.

impressive to try all those things and not get hooked on any of them. not even a little bit, eh?

in terms of speed, i've only ever taken a prescription version called "adderall." no idea what it's called in the nordic countries. but my point is, i found it to be fantastic. and from what i understand, it's a lot smoother and milder than illegal forms of amphetamine. in fact, it seems to be one of the most popular college drugs... a big help in long study sessions and stuff... far more pleasant than taking caffeine pills or whatever.

specifically, adderall really helped me focus and helped reduce my social phobia. it was a great tool for when i had to do a lot of talking / socialising or whatnot... i just felt incredibly friendly, yet also sharp. really was kind of a dream drug for helping with modern life stuff.

of course, the drawbacks are that the body builds tolerance to it over time, and it also produces the urge to grit your teeth for some reason. i suppose that over time, that could be hard on the ol' chompers. so i wouldn't recommend it as a long-term solution, but it can definitely help a person get through hectic crap in their lives.

modafinil seems to have a somewhat similar effect, and is much more prescribed in europe.

kratom is probably the best legal (in most countries) substitute i've ever tried for adderall, just that it's milder and works on more of the opium pathways than the 'speed' pathways. but the effect is similar for some reason.

jesus... one of the most talented actors in the states, philip seymour hoffman, overdosed on heroin and died today. bloody hell. :(

Oh Man, that's blue.

That man will be missed. Now and for a long time to come. Especially come November when we see him in Mockingjay part 1 which I believe he was finished with.
