What music are you listening to?

The 'final' Beatles song came out this week, Now & Then. It's based on a demo John Lennon did in the late 70's, by himself:

Later, a fan put together a modernized, upgraded version: (note the hilarious AI art for the video)

Finally, Paul & Richie took the demo and finished it up, aided by some AI tools, many decades later:

***

Honestly, I prefer the fan edit way more than the 'official' version, starting with the fact that the last version takes what's a pretty, minimalist tune and turns it in to something overproduced that kind of waffles around for no good reason.

Compare that to the other two official group tunes produced after 1970, i.e. Free as a Bird and Real Love, where overproduction was much less of an issue IMO.

<whoops, wasn't finished commenting; accidently hit POST over PREVIEW; will come back to this>

After hearing the demo, it is obvious why they needed to remove the piano. The fidelity of the piano was not good. It is nice that AI was finally able to remove it. It turned out to be a really good song.

Hmm, so what did you think of Free as a Bird and Real Love?

I like Free as a Bird better than Real Love. All 3 songs appear to be a little "over produced" and don't have the energy their other songs have. I wouldn't say any of them are bad though.

Free as Bird A.I.

Wow, interesting! oO

I just listened to the two versions side-by-side to get the best take possible. neo-classic and Lennon-AI aided versions. My thoughts:

First of all, it seems like the AI does wonders for the group vocal sections, making them cleaner and brighter, which works perfectly, given that such sections are usually meant as energy-building, 'cheer-leading' counterparts to leading vocal sections. Which is completely normal, yeah.

OTOH, the new version sounds pretty terrible when it comes to John's vocals, specifically. Why? Because on the original song (likely due to 1- tape and 2- demo aspects), his vocals sound kind of pleasantly gauzy, which IMO lends a sort of textured, wistful quality to his vocals.

The huge, honking problem with the 'AI cleanup' is that it removes that pleasant ambiguity, mainly just pumping up the volume and brightness. Which creates a major, distracting issue, in that the vocals are now distinctly less-nuanced, mysterious, and interesting.

Like I say above, much of that is probably due to qualities of the tape (with its associated noise), but also, simply the fact that Lennon was only singing a demo of the song.

In other words, in the original tape, John pretty clearly was quickly, roughly laying out the main vocal track, without adding much 'singer nuance,' which classically involves playing around with slight improvisations of phrasing, pitch, delay, tempo and so forth that any good singer (or sound engineers, hello Britney) do for final song versions.

Source: just a little pro-am singer, walking in the footsteps of giants. If you're curious, Rick Beato is pretty fun at properly analysing this stuff. Now did he check out FAAB specifically..? Hmm

I never really liked Dolly Parton's music but she just released a song she wrote that I really like called "World on Fire". It seems she reluctantly accepted entrance into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She said she didn't deserve it because she performs mostly country music. So she decided that if she was going to be in the the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame she would have to earn it and recorded a rock album. "World on Fire" is my favorite song on the album and I think it offers a valid commentary on the state of the world.

So a C&W / Rap / Rock song? You don't hear those too often. oO
Wow, I have a lot of reactions to it...

First of all, I feel like I've heard the main melody before in a fairly mainstream song. It's extremely familiar. That said, Dolly obviously did more than just copy or riff on it, adding a new bridge, I think, and ending differently. Also adding confusion is that there are at least two mainstream songs with the same title, one by Sarah McLachlin.

I found the 'globe dress' Dolly opened with to be pretty amazing, like nothing I'd ever seen before. Meanwhile, the awkward-as-hell suits her performers were wearing looked like something left over from Plan 9 from Outer Space. Pretty wild and weird choreography, too!

All that said, I like the way the performance wound up, and even felt moved, with an unexpected lump in my throat. Very impressive crossover album you've made here, Dolly, so hats off to you. :-)

I was a bit like you in that I thought I had heard "World on Fire" before but couldn't place it. It is sort of like Queen's We Will Rock You. I especially like the lyrics of "World on Fire" which are so fitting for today. If you like this song, the rest of the album is at the link below. She wrote a few songs, co-wrote some others and performed a few other well know songs like "Stairway To Heaven". I'm glad she was added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or we probably wouldn't have gotten this album.

Then you might as well watch this video just to see the reaction of the girl in the audience at about 20 seconds into the video.

I'm thinking that girl is Selena Gomez. Just before her appears to be LL Cool J (a VERY old school rapper & actor), then when she appears, it looks like Ed Sheeran on the right, talking to an older guy behind him. In fact the whole crowd's mostly rich & famous people, I guess for the ceremony.

Haha, but it's definitely cute that they reacted that way to Dolly rocking out. :-D

I was thinking of a lower-profile song, I think sung by another female artist. Somewhere in the "Tori Amos" ballpark, maybe. Perhaps I'll think of it one day.

I grew up with the NWOBH, like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Saxon, and still listen to all of them. Also i started to like Sabaton a lot. Sometimes their stuff is to heroic, but the live shows are great. I also can enjoy Dolly Parton and 60s and 70s stuff because of my wife and can annoy neighbours with Behemoth or Broken by the Scream... :D

Unfortunately for all of my friends, i am stuck with Nanowar of Steel at the moment... XD

Haha, funny stuff.
I reeled off the first ~20 of 'em and saved the rest for later.

Those tunes reminded me a lot of Xmas in Frisco.
It's similar stuff, but by a whole bunch of different artists.

For people tired of traditional holiday music. From the offensive, raunchy and nasty to the silly and childish, a mix of music for Hanukkah, Kwanza, Winter Solstice and of course Christmas. You'll probably get in trouble if you listen out loud at the office, but it might be worth it just to offend your annoying co-workers.

You can listen in-browser or via various links that get sent to your music player.

Hullo, feel guilty playing Bob Rivers stuff because it's harder to attribute the people doing the actual playing and singing, but i still do it! Just can't make a real Christmas show without some of that bonkers comedy! Thru grapevine, heard is that Xen grooved somewhat on my Christmas shows, happy to provide some merries! Lucky enough to have 2 radio shows, one of the Christmas shows is archived and streamable as episode #91 at:

That one airs Thursdays 9-10 Eastern if you prefer fresh, then Thursdays 10-midn is my other show, not archived for later-streaming but decent enough to catch live at:

(that TuneIn link jams in 1:30 of ads when you start it, but the black rectangle player below is ad-free, direct from the station.)

This Thurs the topics are "new years" from 9-10pm Eastern and "midnite" from 10pm-12. Honestly, i had my doubts about posting regarding my shows here, but JPH thought it's the kind of stuff folks here might groove on, so there it is. It's just... there's a really wide range of music so there's a founding motto for my shows: "Something For Everyone To Hate."

I had no idea you were a DJ, or player yourself.

Good man! oO

Thanks for sharing your links to your great shows here!
I know for a fact, that I am not the only one who loves these wacky and crazy songs!
Wonderful job!
I am hooked!
I will be listening to your show for the rest of my life!
Carry on.

When I get some more time I need to get caught up with this great thread.

I'm happy to see you post about your radio shows on Thursdays, @Free Bally!

I wanted to add that since we have Users from all over the world, the times mentioned are EST.
The playlist for the 2nd show from 10pm to midnight can be found here: https://gotosleepgotosleepgotosleep.com/
Looking forward to the theme 'midnite' tonight!

I usually use the listen live links in the VLC media player, here are those links:

We lost a lot of great musicians in 2023!
RIP, Gary Wright, just found out via NBC's national news in memoriam segment that he had died.

So... what do we do here, exactly?

Do we need to catch the live show, or is there a huge archive, like with Feldman ?

every year before Xmas my local classic rock station plays A-Z.
its a lot of fun.
impossible to play everything from A-Z in the schedule.
its ok.
listening to a lot of older classic stuff i have not heard in a while because they stopped playing it.
